Everyone who met and interacted with Sharyn was greeted with a warm,
almost timid smile that was a clear representation of the gentle
and caring spirit Sharyn displaced. But inside that gentleness was
a fierce fighter.
As the mother
of her special child, Ashley, Sharyn became an advocate for those
individuals-young and old-who were disabled. She championed, on
many fronts, securing rights for these citizens to help them live
full and complete lives.
Within the NSA
New Orleans chapter, Sharyn was a tireless worker and contributor.
For her efforts, Sharyn was given the Chapter member of the Year
award for the 1998-99 year. In 2003-04 she served as chapter president
and in 2005-06 was the recipient of the Billy Arcement Leadership
Award for her outstanding contributions over the many years of her
membership in NSA New Orleans.
On December
10, 2006, Sharyn lost her long battle with cancer and the world
also lost the presence of a very special person. But, her sense
of humor, the many initiatives for people with disabilities and
the inspiration she displayed with her life's activities are not
lost. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her
and especially within the NSA New Orleans family.
During
the 2007 session of the Louisiana legislature, Sharyn received another
honor. House Concurrent Resolution No. 16 was issued as a tribute
to the tireless effort Sharyn displayed for individuals with disabilities.
