At the June, 2004 chapter meeting, the NSA New Orleans Officers
and Board of Directors recognized a member who they felt had made
an enormous contribution to the success of the chapter since its
formation. In presenting the award, 2003-04 Chapter President, Sharon
Scheyd, offered the following comments:
"This
year the board wanted to recognize a member who we felt had made
an enormous contribution to the success of this chapter since its
formation-a person who has served quietly behind the scenes, always
there to ensure that his beloved chapter continues to improve and
serve the members well. There is nothing the chapter needs done
that he does not do in his quiet, unassuming, professional, and
logical way. No job is too small or too great that he is not willing
to step in when no one else will.
He
was on the original board of directors (a very loose structure the
first five years) when the chapter was formed in 1985 and served
as a board member until June 1990. He began serving as Treasurer
in July 1990 and served in this capacity until July 1994 when he
was elected President. He stayed on the board until July 1995, serving
one year past his Presidency. In August 2000, Marcia Helton resigned
as Treasurer and he filled her term and one more year until July
2002. This year he chaired the Nominating Committee. He was instrumental
in getting the chapter website up and running and he still coordinates
updates to the site.
Our
recipient has a BS in Physical Education and Science, a MEd. in
Administration and Supervision with 36 hours post graduate studies
in Counseling. He has also spent many, many hours reading, attending
seminars and sharing information with NSA friends. He participates
in a mastermind group to build his knowledge base on his core messages
and to increase his value and professionalism.
In
1994, during his presidency, he wanted the chapter to receive recognition
for the NSA Chapter Award. He did it so well that he oversaw the
award until NSA stopped giving it in 2000. Anyone who remembers
this award knows that this was a huge effort on his part.
He
has been a presenter for our chapter programs and helped with and
presented at our Speaker School project.
He
made a commitment when he first joined NSA in 1980 that he would
one day engage in the business of professional speaking. He wants
to share a meaningful message that makes a difference in the life
of people whenever he can. He believes that NSA offers the best
opportunity to learn about this profession and that learning never
stops. He strives each day to get better and continues to learn
skills to make his business efforts more successful.
To
this end, the Board voted unanimously to create the Billy
Arcement Leadership Award.
I
am so honored to present this award to our initial recipient--Billy
Arcement."
